Could You Lift A Couple of Hippos?

Male Hippo Female Hippo

The average female hippo weighs about 3,000 pounds. And the average male hippo weighs about 3,500 pounds. Do you think you could lift them?

I know I couldn’t. At least not by myself. But teamwork makes the dreamwork.

Red Day KW McLean 2015  KW McLean red Day 2015

Earlier this month our KW McLean/Great Falls office celebrated RED DAY – a day where we totally step away from our computers, lap tops & apps – to give back to our local community. This year, as in years past, we collected urgently needed items to restock SHARE of McLean‘s food pantry. (Now, I can’t lie – we may have been negotiating a few contracts in between collecting for SHARE. But shhh – don’t tell!)

Thanks to all of YOU who helped us. The McLean and Great falls community stepped up as usual and we are deeply grateful. My favorite donor was a guy who walked in with earphones on. He took our flyer & didn’t respond when we spoke to him, so we figured he didn’t hear us or wasn’t interested. Out he came a few minutes later and plopped down diapers in our basket. Turns out he was the Giant Food Peapod driver stocking up for deliveries. What a nice guy!

I am proud to say we collected even more food, diapers & paper products than last year. In fact – we collected 6,564 POUNDS worth – plus $1,137 in cash & gift cards! And it took a whole team of committed KW McLean agents, led by the most awesome Diane Miller, to lift the equivalent of a male and female hippo!

Giving is at the heart of our business. It’s why The Belt Team’s mission statement is “Changing Lives For The Better“. We do more than sell real estate. If you would like to help change lives too, we’d love to invite you to our Annual Keller Williams Charity Golf Tournament, Dinner & Auction. The charities that will benefit this year are “Our Military Kids” and “Semper Fi Fund“. You can help by golfing, shopping, sponsoring & more. Call The Belt Team at (703) 242-3975 for details!

But what about a day without coffee, diapers, toothpaste, soap, sugar, laundry detergent, toilet paper and a host of other “basics”?!

Please join The Belt Team and Keller Williams McLean on Thursday as we celebrate KELLER WILLIAMS RED DAY by collecting food & toiletries to replenish the shelves at SHARE of McLean.

Thousands of Keller Williams Realtors and staff members will be donating their time, talent & treasure on May 14th in an effort to help our local communities. You see, at Keller Williams, it’s our motto to “give where we live.” And at The Belt Team – our Mission Statement is “Changing Lives for the Better” – and that doesn’t just apply to real estate!

Tom Francis & Christy Belt Grossman McLean Community Service

Our local McLean office will participate in a drive to benefit SHARE of McLean. SHARE was established in 1969 by a coalition of religious and civic institutions to meet the emergency needs of the less fortunate in McLean, Great Falls, Pimmit Hills and surrounding areas. . And yes – they DO exist in our area. Many of them work 2, 3 & more jobs to survive – jobs that often serve the more affluent residents in our area. Share also serves a large number of seniors who just can’t meet their own needs. Last year they served over 2,500 families (more than 7,500 people).

Share is sustained by donations of food, clothing, furniture and funds, and is administered by ALL volunteers. Agents from our McLean/Great Falls Keller Williams office (including members of The Belt Team) will be outside the McLean Giant. We will be collecting groceries and donations on behalf of SHARE. Look for our tent!

**********************************************************************************************

In a community such as ours, we don’t often think that a life-altering crisis may be just around the corner. But, when Martha moved to McLean with their three children after being abandoned by her husband, the unthinkable actually happened.

With her Master’s degree in hand, Martha settled in with her children, found a job and was able to provide for her family as a single mom. But then her son became seriously ill, and everything changed. She was unable to maintain the schedule required by her employer while also taking care of her son, but not working was not an option. So Martha took a lower paying job that would mesh with her son’s hospital and treatment schedules and used all of her savings to get her family through this rough time.

Within two years, her son was well enough to return to school. But when Martha tried to re-enter the job market in her field, she found that the two years she spent at a low-paying unskilled job had a huge negative impact. So, she did what she had to do and took a second full-time low-paying job to make ends meet; and by the time Martha was referred to Family Preservation and Strengthening Services (Family PASS), she had a third low-paying job on weekends. But, in Fairfax County, even a modest two-bedroom apartment requires an income of $60,000.00. With all three jobs, Martha wasn’t even close; and she was ruining her own health just to keep a roof over the heads of her three children.

After being accepted into the Family PASS program, Martha’s case manager worked with her to restructure her resume and to focus on budget, debt reduction and other goals for herself and her children. Family PASS encouraged her to drop one full-time job and begin to focus on her career development. To ease the financial burden, Family Pass subsidized the bulk of the family’s housing costs, with Martha having to pay just 30 percent of her income toward rent. As a result, Martha was able to secure a position at a local company that paid her more than all three jobs combined, and the family achieved its self-sufficiency goals—all within one year.

Although crisis had been just around the corner, thanks to Martha’s stamina and guidance from Family PASS, the solution for this family was right here in our own backyard as well.
Family PASS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families that are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Fairfax County. The organization provides rent subsidies and connects families with the support services needed to become self-sufficient. More information is available at http://www.FamilyPASSFairfax.org.

Keller Williams Realty McLean Gives Where They Live

When you see Realtors from the Keller Williams McLean office, they’re usually dressed professionally, with a phone to their ear, researching on their ipads or showing property to their clients. But recently, we caught a few of them hanging around in t-shirts & looking pretty messy.

KW McLean and Rebuilding Together Tom Relly

Why? They were volunteering their time with Rebuilding Together to restore & rehab a local home for a homeowner in need.

You’ve probably heard of Habitat For Humanity. But you may not have heard of Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding Together’s vision is for a safe & healthy home for every person. And so they partner with local volunteers to make this happen home by home, block by block. Since they were founded in 1988, Rebuilding Together (along with 3.4 million volunteers) has completed work on more than 100,000 homes across the country.

Well – at Keller Williams, our motto is “We Give Where We Live” and so a number of agents, including our own Belt Team Lead Buyer Specialist Tom Reilly, put on tshirts and got down & dirty to make a difference in one woman’s life. They painted, pulled brush, calked, installed safety bars and did all kinds of unglamorous, but much needed work for a wonderful woman in need. What was her favorite part? The safety bars!

Here’s a peek:

There’s a saying that is attributed to John K Kennedy: “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” I like to think he’d appreciate our Belt Team mission: “Changing Lives For The Better – One Family At A Time“. And I know a wonderful old lady in Falls Church who would agree that that is JUST what Keller Williams McLean did.

Want To Live Like Donald Trump?

KW Cares McLean Charity Auction
Christy Belt Grossman & Special Guest
(The Not Real Donald Trump)

You may not love Donald Trump, but you probably wouldn’t mind living like he does. And now’s your chance!

This is a RARE opportunity to play golf at the normally members-only, elite Trump National Golf Club AND help our Keller Williams Realty office raise money for two awesome charities.

KW McLean Golf

If you are a golfer – this is a DO NOT MISS EVENT that usually sells out quickly! (And if you’re not a golfer, you can join us in the evening for our live & silent auctions and gourmet reception!)

First – the charities.

KW McLean Cares is our 501(c)(3) charitable arm. Our motto is “We Give Where We Live“. And so we have chosen two local charities to benefit from our KW McLean Charity Golf Tournament & Auction: “Our Military Kids” and “Stop Soldier Suicide“.

Our Military Kids            Stop Soldier Suicide

Our Military Kids provides support in the form of grants to the children of National Guard and Military Reserve personnel who are currently deployed overseas, as well as the children of Wounded Warriors in all branches. The grants pay for participation in sports, fine arts, camps, and tutoring programs that nurture and sustain children while a parent is away in service to our country or recovering from injury.

You might recognize the name Gabby Douglas. She’s a young athlete who won 2 gold medals in gymnastics at the Olympics in London last year. Well – guess who received a grant that enabled her to attend a gymnastics camp 6 years earlier in Texas with renowned coaches Bela & Marta Karolyi? Yup – Gabby Douglas. (You can read more about Gabby & Our Military Kids here.)

The second charity we selected is “Stop Soldier Suicide. Stop Soldier Suicide is the first national civilian not-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing Soldier and Veteran suicide. I’ll bet you would be surprised to know that there are 1 Active-duty Soldier a day and 22 Veterans a day taking their own lives. This group is committed to helping their brothers and sisters in arms get the help they need, without shame or fear of losing their military post.

Now – here are the details for a day TRUMP STYLE! Be there – or “YOU’RE FIRED!”)

Who Needs The Postal Service?

“Who needs the postal service?” (OK – that’s another whole blog post – isn’t it?!)

But seriously, when you need something delivered, call on Keller Williams Realty. Nope, I’m not talking about the mail. I’m talking about something even more important. Food.

Red Day 2013 KW Mclean Great Falls 2

Lots of groups in our area collect food for area food banks. And since our real estate office is in McLean – we are supporters of SHARE of McLean. SHARE’s clients are the working poor. And before you ask, let me answer – YES, the McLean area has its share of poor. You might be surprised, but last year SHARE provided assistance to 2,500+ families (more than 7,500 people) – including economically distressed families, seniors on limited incomes, victims of abuse and even homeless folks.

One of the reasons why The Belt Team affiliated with Keller Williams Realty 5 years ago, is that Keller Williams has a year-round commitment to improving our local communities. We have a saying “We give where we live.” It’s why The Belt Team is proud to sponsor so many local charitable events & community teams – things like Youth Apostles, St. Mark Catholic School, Vienna Little League & more.

Red Day 2013 KW Mclean Great Falls

But once a year, on the 2nd Thursday in May, we have a special day called “RED DAY”. RED stands for “Renew, Energize and Donate”. And our entire company stops what they are doing in order to take on special events to make a difference in our communities. (Keep in mind that Keller Williams is the largest real estate company by agent count in the entire United States, with over 80,000 agents!)

All kinds of magical things happen on RED DAY. Homes are rebuilt or restored. Senior citizens get dancing partners and go to “Senior Prom”s. Gardens are planted or weeded. Cemetery headstones are cleaned. And here in McLean, SHARE’s food bank is replenished.

I’m proud to announce that this year, our McLean/Great falls office has set the SHARE of McLean record (AGAIN!). We even collected more than the United States Postal Service – assembling 7,586 pounds (almost 4 TONS) of food & supplies (including more than 9,000 diapers). (That’s more than a “Mommy & Daddy River Hippopatamus” weigh!)

Red Day 2013 KW Mclean Great Falls 3

Thanks to all who donated to help those in need. We really appreciate your support! (And a special thanks to Diane Miller in our office who organizes RED Day each year. Diane – you ROCK!)

And don’t forget, The Belt Team and Keller Williams Realty deliver. So when you need to get something done (like buying or selling a house!) – you know who to call. And it ain’t Ghostbusters! Call The Belt Team at (703) 242-3975
